ENGLISH TEACHING PROGRAMME
The TCP offers free English training programs to local communities, to improve participants' skills and enhance their employment prospects. By encouraging employment in non-resource-dependent sectors, such as local government services, the program helps reduce community reliance on environmental exploitation. These free classes are especially valuable to families that are unable to afford private English lessons.
From 1994 to 1999, the TCP conducted English classes in Rekawa, led by volunteer teachers from the UK. Around 350 community members—including children, adults, and local English teachers—benefited from the program. These classes also improved the communication skills of community members involved in the TCP’s research and conservation efforts.
Currently, the TCP’s volunteers provide free English lessons twice a week to beach guides running the ‘turtle watch’ program on Rekawa Beach. This training allows guides to communicate with tourists, improving visitor experiences while giving guides greater control over tourist activities.
